Abstract

The article provides a comprehensive analysis of theoretical approaches to understanding the national brand and traces the specific features of the international image transformation of Germany and Italy after the collapse of authoritarian regimes. The study reveals the essence of the national brand as a multidimensional phenomenon and demonstrates the connection between the national brand and historical memory, public diplomacy, soft power, cultural symbols, and the country-of-origin effect. The article examines how Germany’s new positive image was shaped through policies aimed at overcoming the Nazi past, post-war economic recovery, the consolidation of the «Made in Germany» reputation, and modern branding campaigns. It is shown that in Italy the transformation of the international image was more complex and less linear, combining the controversial reinterpretation of the Fascist legacy with the gradual affirmation of a culturally attractive image through art, fashion, design, language, and the concept of «Made in Italy». As a result, the study identifies both common and distinctive features in the transformation of the international image of the two states and proves that the renewal of state reputation after an authoritarian past depends on the combination of internal transformations and consistent external positioning.
