FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL IMPACTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the largest global shocks of the 21st century, significantly transforming financial systems and the social structure of society. The article provides an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the financial and social consequences of the pandemic. The study covers the key macroeconomic indicators, institutional changes, and social transformations that have occurred under the influence of the pandemic crisis. In the financial aspect, the impact of the pandemic on the dynamics of Gross Domestic Product, as well as the state of public finances, is considered. The reasons for the decline in economic activity, disruption of supply chains, reduction in trade volumes and changes in the structure of consumer demand are analyzed. Special attention is given to the growth of budget deficits, public debt and the need for large-scale state  intervention. The social dimension of the study covers the analysis of changes in the labor market, in particular the growth of unemployment rate, the spread of unstable forms of employment and the decline in the population income. The study investigates the increase in social inequality, the deterioration of access to the basic social services, including healthcare and education, as well as the rise in poverty among vulnerable groups of the population. The impact of quarantine restrictions on the psycho-emotional state of the population and social isolation is separately highlighted. The paper also studies the progress of the digitalization of the economy and society, in the rapid development of remote work, e-commerce, online education, and digital services. It identifies both the positive effects of these changes (increased flexibility and innovation) and new challenges related to digital inequality and limited access to technology. As a result, the key lessons of the pandemic were identified and strategic directions for the formation of sustainable economic and social systems in the post-pandemic period were outlined. In particular, the need to increase the adaptability of the economy, develop human capital, strengthen the social protection system, diversify sources of economic growth and introduce innovative technologies was emphasized. The obtained results can be used to improve the public policy, develop anti-crisis strategies and ensure sustainable development in the conditions of global challenges.
